Our Story
Since 2011, Boise Lumber has been on a mission to keep quality wood out of Idaho's landfills and in the hands of builders, craftspeople, and homeowners who value sustainability as much as they value quality.
How It Started
Boise Lumber started the way a lot of good things in Idaho do — with someone who saw a problem and refused to ignore it. In 2011, our founder was working construction in the Treasure Valley when he watched a crew send an entire dumpster of reusable framing lumber to the Ada County Landfill. Straight beams, solid joists, planks with decades of life left — all of it headed for the ground.
That dumpster became the catalyst. Within weeks, he had a pickup truck, a portable sawmill, and a handshake deal with a local demolition contractor. The pitch was simple: instead of paying disposal fees, let us take the wood. We would sort it, process it, and sell it to people who could use it. The demolition company saved money, builders got quality lumber at a fair price, and perfectly good wood stayed out of the landfill.
That first summer, operating out of a rented lot on Beverly Street, Boise Lumber processed about 12,000 board feet of reclaimed material — mostly Douglas fir and pine pulled from agricultural buildings and mid-century residential teardowns. The demand was immediate. Contractors wanted dimensional lumber for framing. Furniture makers wanted character-grade planks for tabletops. Homeowners wanted accent walls with history baked into the grain.
What started as a side operation quickly became a full-time business, and the core idea hasn't changed: every board deserves a second life, and the people of Idaho deserve a better option than big-box disposability.
Our Journey
What We Believe
These aren't slogans printed on a wall. They're the operating principles that guide every decision we make — from which lumber to salvage to how we price it.
Our People
Our crew is made up of woodworkers, equipment operators, graders, and logistics specialists who share a common thread: they genuinely care about the material they handle. Several of our team members came from careers in forestry, construction, and cabinetry before joining Boise Lumber. That cross-disciplinary knowledge means we can advise on everything from species selection to structural load ratings to finish compatibility.
We invest in ongoing training — sawmill operation, NHLA grading standards, kiln scheduling, and equipment safety. When you reach out to Boise Lumber, you get a response from someone who can answer your question directly — no runaround.
We also believe in paying fair wages and providing stable employment. The lumber industry has a reputation for seasonal, low-wage work. We do it differently. Year-round positions, benefits, and a workplace culture where people stick around because they want to, not because they have to.
Visit Our Yard
Walk-ins are always welcome. Our yard is open for browsing during business hours, and our team is on-site to help you find the right material for your project. If you're looking for something specific, call ahead and we'll pull it for you before you arrive.
Meet the Team
Our crew brings decades of combined experience in forestry, construction, woodworking, and logistics. Every person on our team shares a genuine passion for the material and a commitment to doing right by the customer and the environment.
Our Facilities
Our Beverly Street operation has grown from a rented lot with a portable sawmill to a full-service lumber facility with dedicated processing, storage, and staging areas.
Community Roots
We are not a franchise and we are not a branch office of a national chain. Boise Lumber is locally owned, locally operated, and deeply embedded in the Treasure Valley community. Our success depends on the health and growth of the communities we serve, and we take that responsibility seriously.
Every year, we donate lumber to community organizations building affordable housing, community gardens, playground structures, and public art installations. We have partnered with Habitat for Humanity Boise on multiple home builds, supplying reclaimed framing lumber and finish material at cost or as in-kind donations.
We sponsor woodworking programs at three Treasure Valley high schools, providing offcuts, surplus boards, and educational visits where our team teaches students about species identification, grading, and sustainable forestry practices. Several of our current employees were introduced to the lumber trade through these programs.
We are active members of the Boise Chamber of Commerce, the Treasure Valley Builders Association, and the Idaho Conservation League. We host quarterly open-yard events where builders, designers, and the public can tour our facility, learn about reclaimed lumber, and see our processing operations firsthand.
Recognition
We do not chase awards, but we are honored when our community and industry peers recognize the work we do.
From Source to Site
Every piece of lumber that leaves our yard goes through a rigorous, multi-step process designed to ensure quality, consistency, and traceability.
We maintain active relationships with over 100 demolition contractors, renovation crews, and property owners across six Idaho counties. When a structure is being demolished or renovated, our salvage team assesses the site for recoverable lumber. We evaluate species, condition, quantity, and access logistics. Material is acquired through purchase, trade, or salvage agreements — keeping quality wood out of the waste stream and putting money back in the hands of property owners and contractors.
Our fleet handles all pickup and transport. Material arrives at our Beverly Street yard and enters the intake area, where each load is logged with source information, estimated volume, and species identification. This documentation creates a chain of custody that follows the lumber through every subsequent step and allows us to provide provenance information to customers who need it.
Every board is hand-inspected by our grading team. Fasteners are identified and removed. Each piece is checked for rot, insect damage, structural cracks, warping, and checking. Material is sorted into processing queues: structural-grade boards go to the milling line, character-grade planks are set aside for decorative applications, and material unsuitable for either is routed to landscape use or residual recovery.
Reclaimed boards go through a thorough de-nailing process where every nail, screw, staple, and embedded fastener is removed by hand. This step is critical for protecting our milling equipment and ensuring customer safety. Boards are then cleaned of surface dirt, paint, and debris as needed while preserving desirable character marks like patina, saw marks, and weathering.
Cleaned boards enter our milling line where they are planed to smooth surfaces, resawn to target thickness, and cut to specified lengths. Our moulder handles profile work — tongue-and-groove, shiplap, V-groove, and custom profiles. Dimensional accuracy is maintained within a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch. This step transforms rough salvaged timber into material that meets the same standards builders expect from new stock.
Material destined for interior use or requiring specific moisture content enters our commercial kiln. Our programmable dehumidification kiln brings lumber to target moisture levels — typically 6 to 8 percent for furniture and finish work, 12 to 15 percent for structural framing. The heat treatment also reaches 56 degrees Celsius core temperature for 30 minutes, satisfying ISPM-15 requirements and eliminating any insects, larvae, or mold.
Finished lumber is graded according to NHLA standards for hardwoods and structural grading rules for dimensional lumber. Each board receives a grade stamp, is tagged with species and moisture content data, and is entered into our inventory system. Boards are then racked in our yard or warehouse, organized by species, dimension, and grade for efficient customer access.
Customers purchase from our yard, by email, or through our online ordering system. Orders are assembled in our staging area, verified against order tickets for accuracy, and either picked up by the customer or loaded onto our delivery trucks for drop-off. Our delivery fleet covers the entire Treasure Valley with same-week service and runs scheduled routes across southwestern Idaho.
