Our Approach

New Lumber, Done Right

Boise Lumber was built on reclaimed wood, and that remains our specialty. But we added a new lumber line because our customers asked for it — and because we realized we could source and sell new stock with the same commitment to quality, fair pricing, and environmental responsibility that defines everything else we do.

Our new lumber comes from mills in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana that operate on sustainably managed forestlands. We prioritize suppliers who practice selective harvesting over clear-cutting, maintain third-party forest certifications, and invest in reforestation. We do not carry lumber from unknown or unverified sources.

The result is a curated selection of softwoods and hardwoods — not the sprawling inventory of a big-box warehouse, but a focused stock of species and grades that our customers actually use, stored properly and sold by people who understand what they are selling.

Species Guide

What We Carry

Our new lumber inventory covers the species most commonly used in Idaho construction, furniture making, and finish carpentry. If you need something we do not stock, we can typically special-order it within one to two weeks.

Softwoods

Douglas Fir

The workhorse of Pacific Northwest construction. Excellent strength-to-weight ratio, dimensional stability, and natural resistance to warping. Our Douglas fir is sourced from managed forests in Idaho and Oregon and arrives kiln-dried to 19% or less moisture content.

Common uses: Structural framing, beams, posts, decking substructure, heavy timber construction

Available grades: Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2, Stud

Western Red Cedar

Naturally decay-resistant and insect-resistant without chemical treatment. Lightweight, easy to work, and dimensionally stable. The tight, even grain and warm reddish-brown color make it a top choice for both structural and appearance applications in exterior environments.

Common uses: Decking, fencing, siding, pergolas, outdoor furniture, garden beds, saunas

Available grades: Clear, Select Tight Knot, No. 2 & Better

Ponderosa Pine

Idaho's signature softwood. Light in color with a uniform grain pattern, Ponderosa pine machines cleanly and accepts stain and paint well. It is softer than fir but excels in non-structural applications where workability and appearance matter.

Common uses: Interior trim, shelving, paneling, moulding stock, cabinetry, craft projects

Available grades: C Select, D Select, No. 2 Common, No. 3 Common

Spruce-Pine-Fir (SPF)

The standard framing lumber sold at most lumberyards — a grade-stamped mix of spruce, pine, and fir species. We carry the full range of dimensional SPF for residential and light commercial framing, and our stock is stickered and stored properly to prevent moisture uptake and warping.

Common uses: Wall framing, floor joists, roof rafters, blocking, cripples, headers

Available grades: Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2, Stud, Utility

Hardwoods

Red Oak

The most widely used domestic hardwood, prized for its pronounced grain pattern, strength, and excellent stain acceptance. Our red oak is sourced from sustainably managed Appalachian and Midwestern forests and arrives surfaced on two sides or rough-sawn, depending on customer preference.

Common uses: Flooring, cabinetry, furniture, stair components, architectural millwork

Available grades: FAS, Select, No. 1 Common, No. 2 Common

White Oak

Denser and more moisture-resistant than red oak, with a tighter grain and slightly warmer color tone. White oak contains tyloses — cellular structures that make the wood impervious to water penetration — making it the preferred choice for outdoor furniture, boat building, and barrel-making.

Common uses: Outdoor furniture, flooring, cabinetry, barrels, boat components, heavy-use surfaces

Available grades: FAS, Select, No. 1 Common

Hard Maple

Extremely hard and wear-resistant, hard maple (sugar maple) is the go-to species for surfaces that take abuse: butcher blocks, workbenches, gym floors, and high-traffic commercial flooring. The fine, uniform grain finishes to a silky smooth surface.

Common uses: Butcher blocks, workbenches, flooring, cutting boards, turned items, musical instruments

Available grades: FAS, Select, No. 1 Common

Black Walnut

The premier American furniture wood. Rich chocolate-brown heartwood with lighter sapwood creates striking visual contrast. Walnut is moderately hard, machines beautifully, and develops a warm patina with age. We stock walnut in thicknesses from 4/4 through 8/4.

Common uses: Fine furniture, gun stocks, turned objects, decorative paneling, cutting boards, mantels

Available grades: FAS, Select, No. 1 Common

Choosing the Right Material

When New Lumber Makes Sense

We will always be honest with you: if reclaimed lumber works for your project, we will recommend it first. Reclaimed stock is typically seasoned, stable, and carries a lower environmental footprint than newly harvested timber. It also often costs less for standard dimensional sizes.

But there are legitimate situations where new lumber is the right call. Building codes, uniformity requirements, species availability, volume guarantees, and traceability needs all create scenarios where fresh-cut stock from a known mill is the practical and responsible choice.

The bottom line: we are not dogmatic. We care about helping you pick the right material for your specific project, and sometimes that means new lumber.

Code-Required Applications

Certain building codes and structural engineering specifications require grade-stamped new lumber with certified span ratings. Foundation sills, engineered floor systems, and load-bearing walls in jurisdictions that require stamped lumber are applications where new stock is the correct choice.

Uniform Appearance Projects

When a project calls for perfectly consistent color, grain, and dimensions — such as a large-format ceiling installation, matched cabinetry, or uniform exterior cladding — new lumber from a single mill run delivers the consistency that reclaimed material, by nature, cannot.

Species Not Available Reclaimed

Some species are rarely found in reclaimed form. Walnut, cherry, hard maple, and exotic hardwoods are more commonly available as new stock. If your project requires a species that our reclaimed inventory does not carry, our new lumber line fills the gap.

Volume and Timeline Certainty

Reclaimed lumber availability fluctuates with salvage sources. If you need a guaranteed volume on a fixed timeline — 5,000 board feet of 2x6 SPF by next Tuesday, for example — new stock provides supply certainty that reclaimed cannot always match.

Chemical-Sensitive Environments

For food-contact surfaces, children's furniture, or applications where the material history of reclaimed wood creates a concern, new lumber with a known chain of custody from forest to mill to yard provides complete traceability and peace of mind.

Competitive Pricing

We price our new lumber competitively with big-box retailers — and often beat them on specialty species and premium grades. Volume discounts are available for contractor accounts and orders over 1,000 board feet. No membership fees, no surcharges, no games.

Hand-Selected Stock

Unlike chain stores where you sort through a bin hoping to find straight boards, our lumber is stickered, stored flat, and protected from weather. We hand-select from incoming shipments and reject material that does not meet our grading standards. What reaches the sales floor is the best of the delivery.

Special Orders Welcome

Need teak for a boat project? Ash for a baseball bat? Figured maple for a guitar top? We can source specialty and exotic species through our mill and distributor network, typically with a one-to-two-week lead time. Let us know what you need and we will get you a quote.

Treatment Options

Wood Treatment & Preservation

For applications requiring enhanced durability, we stock treated lumber and can advise on treatment options for specific project requirements.

Pressure-Treated (ACQ/CA-B)

Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ) and Copper Azole (CA-B) are the current industry-standard treatments for ground-contact and structural exterior applications. These copper-based preservatives replaced CCA (chromated copper arsenate) and provide excellent protection against decay, termites, and fungal attack. We stock pressure-treated lumber in all standard framing and post dimensions.

Best for: Ground contact, deck substructure, fence posts, retaining walls, sill plates, structural exterior framing

Note: Requires stainless steel or ACQ-rated fasteners — standard galvanized corrodes in contact with copper-treated wood. Not suitable for food-contact surfaces.

Kiln-Dried After Treatment (KDAT)

Standard pressure-treated lumber arrives wet from the treatment process. KDAT material has been kiln-dried after treatment to reduce moisture content to 19 percent or below. This makes it lighter, more stable, ready to stain or paint immediately, and less likely to warp, twist, or check after installation.

Best for: All pressure-treated applications where dimensional stability and immediate finishing are priorities

Note: Costs 10-15% more than standard wet-treated stock but saves significant time and reduces callbacks from post-installation warping.

Borate Treatment

Sodium borate (SBX/DOT) treatment provides protection against wood-destroying insects, termites, and decay fungi for interior and covered applications. Borate is non-toxic to humans and animals, making it suitable for environments where copper-based treatments are a concern. Available as a factory-applied or field-applied treatment.

Best for: Interior framing, sill plates, crawl spaces, attic framing, log home treatment, covered exterior

Note: Water-soluble — not suitable for direct ground contact or uncovered exterior applications. Low toxicity makes it safe for residential and food-adjacent use.

Heat Treatment (HT)

Heat treatment raises the core temperature of lumber to 133 degrees Fahrenheit (56 Celsius) for a minimum of 30 minutes, killing insects, larvae, and pathogens. Required by international phytosanitary standards (ISPM 15) for wood packaging and shipping materials. All of our KD-HT framing stock meets this standard.

Best for: Export packaging, pallets, crating, international shipping, general framing

Note: Does not provide long-term decay or insect resistance — it is a one-time sterilization treatment. Compliant with ISPM 15 international wood packaging regulations.

Fire-Retardant Treatment (FRT)

Pressure-impregnated fire-retardant chemicals slow the spread of flame and reduce smoke development. Required by code in certain commercial, multi-family, and institutional applications. We can special-order FRT lumber in standard framing dimensions with 1-2 week lead time.

Best for: Commercial construction, multi-family buildings, roof sheathing near property lines, balcony framing, code-required applications

Note: FRT lumber cannot be field-cut without re-treatment of exposed surfaces. Interior and exterior formulations differ — specify application at time of order.

Natural Decay-Resistant Species

The most sustainable "treatment" is no treatment at all. Several species we carry — western red cedar, redwood, white oak, and black locust — contain natural extractives that resist decay, insects, and fungal attack without chemical intervention. For many exterior applications, these species provide decades of durability with a clean environmental profile.

Best for: Decking, fencing, siding, garden beds, outdoor furniture, pergolas, raised planters

Note: Heartwood only provides natural resistance — sapwood of naturally durable species has no decay resistance. Specify heartwood for ground-contact applications.

Structural Engineering

Understanding Lumber Grades & Structural Ratings

Structural lumber in the United States is graded according to rules established by regional grading agencies under the oversight of the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC). Each piece of grade-stamped lumber carries a mark identifying the mill, the grading agency, the species or species group, the moisture content at time of surfacing, and the assigned structural grade.

These grades directly determine the allowable design values — bending strength (Fb), modulus of elasticity (E), shear strength (Fv), compression parallel and perpendicular to grain (Fc and Fc-perp), and tension parallel to grain (Ft). Engineers and building officials reference these values from the National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction to determine span tables, post capacities, and connection requirements.

All of our new structural lumber arrives grade-stamped from certified mills. We store and handle it according to industry standards to maintain the integrity of the grade stamp. If you need specific grade documentation or mill certifications for a permit application, we can provide them.

Select Structural

The highest visual and structural grade for dimension lumber. Minimal knots, wane, and defects. Highest allowable design values. Suitable for exposed applications where both appearance and strength matter — post-and-beam construction, exposed headers, and architectural framing.

No. 1

High-quality structural grade with tight knots, minor wane, and limited defects. Slightly lower design values than Select Structural but significantly more available and affordable. Standard grade for structural headers, tall walls, and critical framing members.

No. 2

The most commonly specified structural grade for residential and light commercial framing. Allows larger knots and more defects than No. 1 but still rated for load-bearing use. Covers the vast majority of wall framing, floor joist, and roof rafter applications in residential construction.

No. 3 / Stud

Lower structural capacity suitable for non-load-bearing partitions, cripple studs, and light-duty applications. Stud grade is specifically evaluated for use as vertical wall members and is not rated for horizontal bending applications like joists or rafters.

Design Strategy

When to Mix New with Reclaimed

Many of our most successful customer projects use both new and reclaimed lumber strategically. Here is how to combine them effectively.

New Framing + Reclaimed Finishes

The most common combination. Grade-stamped new SPF for structural walls, floors, and roof — reclaimed wood for the visible elements: accent walls, exposed beams (non-structural or decorative wraps), flooring, and trim. This approach satisfies code requirements while delivering the character and authenticity of reclaimed wood where it matters most.

New Hardwood + Reclaimed Softwood

Use new hardwood species (walnut, maple, cherry) for furniture surfaces and high-wear applications where consistency and hardness are critical, paired with reclaimed softwood (pine, fir) for structural frames, shelf supports, and secondary surfaces. The contrast between new and aged wood can be a deliberate design feature.

Reclaimed Structure + New Cladding

For projects featuring exposed timber frames, use reclaimed structural timbers for the posts and beams (where the character of old-growth wood is most visible), and new lumber for concealed framing, subflooring, and secondary structural members where appearance does not matter.

Mixed Species Feature Walls

Combine new and reclaimed boards of different species, widths, and colors in a single feature wall installation. The variation in age, species, grain pattern, and color creates a rich, layered aesthetic. We can help you select complementary boards from both our new and reclaimed inventory.

Environmental Standards

Certifications & Responsible Sourcing

We believe that buying new lumber should not mean contributing to deforestation or irresponsible forestry practices. That is why we prioritize suppliers who hold recognized environmental certifications and can document their chain-of-custody from forest to mill to our yard.

While not every board we sell carries a certification stamp (the certification landscape is complex and not all responsible mills pursue formal certification), we verify our suppliers' forestry practices through direct relationships, site visits, and documentation review. We know where our wood comes from.

For projects requiring formally certified material — LEED builds, government contracts, corporate sustainability programs — we can source FSC-certified or SFI-certified lumber in most species and dimensions with advance notice.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

The most widely recognized international forest certification. FSC-certified lumber comes from forests managed according to strict environmental, social, and economic standards. Chain-of-custody certification tracks the wood from forest through every stage of processing to the end customer.

SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative)

A North American certification program requiring sustainable forest management, protection of biodiversity, and responsible procurement practices. SFI-certified fiber sourcing covers both owned and purchased wood, ensuring broad supply chain responsibility.

PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)

An international umbrella organization that endorses national forest certification systems worldwide. PEFC-certified material meets locally adapted sustainable forestry standards while providing international recognition and chain-of-custody tracking.

Idaho Forest Practices Act

All timber harvested in Idaho must comply with the Idaho Forest Practices Act, which mandates reforestation after harvest, stream protection zones, road construction standards, and fire prevention measures. Our Idaho-sourced lumber meets these state requirements as a baseline.
