Learn About Purchasing

For Sellers

Sell Your Lumber to Us

Have lumber from a demolition, renovation, or land clearing project? We buy usable reclaimed and surplus new lumber. We evaluate material based on species, condition, dimensions, and volume — and we pay fair market prices.

We accept structural timbers, dimensional framing lumber, hardwood flooring, siding, decking, and specialty woods. Material needs to be free of rot, excessive splitting, and hazardous coatings. Nails and minor surface damage are fine — we handle de-nailing and milling in-house.

For large lots and demolition site pickups, we provide on-site evaluation and can arrange our own transport. Smaller quantities can be dropped off at our yard during business hours.

Sustainability

Every Board Has an Environmental Story

The lumber industry accounts for a significant share of construction and demolition waste in Idaho. When usable wood goes to a landfill, it represents wasted embodied energy — the water, sunlight, and decades of growth it took to produce that material, plus the fuel and labor that went into milling and transporting it the first time.

By choosing reclaimed or recycled wood products from Boise Lumber, you directly reduce demand for virgin timber harvesting and keep material out of Idaho's waste stream. Our reclaimed inventory alone has diverted over 3 million board feet from landfills since 2011.

Even our new lumber line is responsibly sourced from managed forests with documented chain-of-custody practices. We believe you should never have to choose between quality materials and environmental responsibility.

Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right Lumber

Whether this is your first lumber purchase or your thousandth, these guidelines help you match the right material to your specific project requirements.

Define Your Application

Structural framing requires grade-stamped dimensional lumber rated for load-bearing use. Decorative applications like accent walls or furniture open the door to reclaimed character-grade stock. Outdoor projects demand species with natural decay resistance or pressure treatment. Start by identifying whether your project is structural, decorative, interior, or exterior — this narrows your options immediately.

Understand Wood Species

Different species have dramatically different properties. Douglas fir excels in structural applications with its high strength-to-weight ratio. Cedar and redwood resist rot naturally and suit outdoor projects. Oak and maple are dense hardwoods ideal for flooring and furniture. Pine is affordable and easy to work for trim and shelving. Our staff can walk you through species selection based on your specific needs.

Choose Your Grade

Lumber grading determines appearance, structural capacity, and price. Select and Better grades have minimal knots and defects. No. 1 and No. 2 grades allow progressively more character marks. For reclaimed lumber, our in-house grading system rates material on structural soundness, surface condition, and overall usability. Higher grades cost more but waste less during fabrication.

Calculate Quantities Accurately

Measure twice, order once — with a waste factor. For framing lumber, plan on 10 to 15 percent extra for cuts, defects, and layout waste. For flooring and siding, factor in 15 to 20 percent overage to account for end-matching, pattern waste, and culling. Reclaimed lumber with irregular lengths may require 20 to 25 percent extra. We help customers calculate material lists from plans or sketches.

Consider Moisture Content

Lumber moisture content affects stability, workability, and finish adhesion. Kiln-dried framing stock (KD-HT) arrives at 19 percent or less and is ready for enclosed construction. Air-dried lumber sits around 12 to 15 percent. Reclaimed interior-sourced material is typically 6 to 10 percent — the most stable option. For flooring and furniture, target 6 to 8 percent moisture content.

Plan Your Budget

Lumber pricing varies by species, grade, dimension, and source. Reclaimed framing stock often costs 10 to 20 percent less than equivalent new material. Premium reclaimed barn wood and character-grade boards carry a premium for their rarity and authenticity. New hardwoods like walnut and cherry are priced by the board foot based on grade and thickness. We provide transparent, itemized quotes with no hidden fees.

Volume Pricing

Better Prices at Higher Volumes

We offer tiered pricing that rewards larger purchases and repeat business. Whether you are a homeowner buying materials for a single project or a contractor running multiple jobs throughout the year, our pricing structure ensures you get fair value at every level.

Volume discounts are applied automatically — no membership cards, no annual fees, no minimum purchase requirements to maintain a pricing tier. The discount is calculated on the order itself, so a one-time large purchase receives the same pricing as a contractor with an established account.

For contractors and commercial accounts, we also offer 30-day net terms (credit-approved), scheduled recurring deliveries, dedicated account management, and the ability to reserve material for upcoming jobs.

Quality Assurance

Our 7-Point Inspection Process

Every piece of lumber that reaches our sales floor — reclaimed or new — passes through a multi-step quality assurance process. This is how we maintain consistent standards across a constantly rotating inventory.

01

Source Verification

We document the origin of every load: salvage site location, building type, estimated age, and any known treatment history. New lumber arrives with mill certifications, grade stamps, and chain-of-custody paperwork.

02

Contamination Screening

Reclaimed material is checked for lead paint, creosote, CCA treatment, and other hazardous coatings using visual inspection and, when warranted, XRF testing. Contaminated material is refused or segregated and disposed of properly.

03

Metal Detection

Every board passes through industrial metal detectors to find embedded nails, screws, staples, wire, and other ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Detected metal is removed by hand before the board proceeds to grading.

04

Moisture Testing

Pin-type and pinless moisture meters are used to verify moisture content on every batch. Material outside acceptable ranges is either kiln-dried in-house or segregated for air-drying before being added to saleable inventory.

05

Visual Grading

Trained graders evaluate each piece for knots, splits, checks, wane, bow, twist, cup, and other defects. Material is assigned a grade based on published grading standards for its species and intended application.

06

Dimensional Measurement

Thickness, width, and length are verified and recorded. Reclaimed material with non-standard dimensions is noted and priced accordingly. Boards that need surfacing or ripping are flagged for milling.

07

Inventory & Storage

Graded material is stickered, stacked by species and dimension, and stored under cover to prevent moisture uptake and sun damage. Inventory is logged with species, grade, dimensions, and quantity for accurate stock tracking.

Popular Combinations

What Customers Buy Together

These are the product combinations our customers order most frequently. Each bundle represents a complete material package for a common project type.

Farmhouse Accent Wall

  • Reclaimed barn wood planks (random widths)
  • Brad nails or construction adhesive
  • Clear matte polyurethane sealer
  • Pre-stain wood conditioner
  • Furring strips for uneven walls

Typically 1.5x the wall square footage in board footage to account for random widths and end-trimming waste.

Backyard Deck Build

  • New western red cedar 5/4x6 decking
  • Pressure-treated 2x8 or 2x10 joists
  • Cedar-compatible stainless steel screws
  • Post bases and joist hangers (Simpson)
  • Semi-transparent deck stain (UV-stabilized)

Cedar decking should be fastened with stainless or coated screws — galvanized causes tannin staining.

Restaurant Bar Top

  • Reclaimed oak or fir planks (2" thick)
  • Titebond III waterproof wood glue
  • Bar-top epoxy or commercial-grade poly
  • End-grain sealer for exposed edges
  • Steel hairpin or custom welded base

We can mill, join, flatten, and finish bar tops in-house. Ask about our turnkey bar top program.

Privacy Fence

  • New cedar 1x6 fence pickets (dog-ear or flat)
  • Pressure-treated 4x4 posts
  • Pressure-treated 2x4 rails
  • Hot-dipped galvanized ring-shank nails
  • Exterior fence stain or sealer

Custom-milled fence pickets in non-standard widths and profiles available through our milling service.

Exposed Beam Ceiling

  • Reclaimed structural timbers (6x6 to 8x12)
  • Structural timber screws or through-bolts
  • Concealed beam hangers
  • Penetrating oil finish or natural clear coat
  • Sanding supplies for touch-up

We verify dimensions of reclaimed beams for connector sizing — old-growth timbers are rarely exactly nominal.

Raised Garden Bed Kit

  • Reclaimed cedar boards (untreated)
  • Corner brackets (galvanized)
  • Landscape fabric liner
  • Structural screws (exterior-rated)
  • Wood chips for pathways between beds

Our pre-built raised bed kits come in 4x4 and 4x8 sizes, or we can cut custom dimensions to order.

Seasonal Notes

Availability Throughout the Year

Lumber availability in Idaho follows seasonal patterns driven by construction activity, salvage schedules, and mill production cycles. Understanding these patterns helps you plan purchases, avoid shortages, and sometimes find better pricing.

Our new lumber supply is relatively consistent year-round, with occasional tightness during peak construction season (May through September) when regional demand spikes. Reclaimed lumber availability fluctuates more significantly because it depends on demolition and deconstruction project timelines.

We recommend placing orders for large reclaimed lumber projects 4 to 6 weeks in advance during peak season. For new lumber, standard stock items are typically available same-day year-round, with special orders requiring 1 to 2 weeks regardless of season.

Spring (March - May)

Peak ordering season as construction ramps up. Strong reclaimed supply as barn demolitions and rural cleanup projects begin. Best time to order decking, fencing, and outdoor project materials before summer demand peaks. New lumber prices tend to rise through spring.

Summer (June - August)

Highest demand period. New lumber supply can tighten and prices peak. Reclaimed supply is steady as demolition season is fully underway. Order early for large projects. Mulch and landscape products are in highest demand. Delivery schedules fill quickly.

Fall (September - November)

Demand eases after Labor Day. New lumber prices typically soften. Excellent time to stock up for winter indoor projects. Last window for outdoor project materials before weather limits installation. Good reclaimed supply as end-of-season demolitions wrap up.

Winter (December - February)

Lowest demand period and often the best pricing on new lumber. Reclaimed supply slows as salvage operations pause in poor weather. Ideal time for interior projects: furniture, flooring, accent walls, custom milling. Our facility operates year-round with full milling capabilities.

Customer Projects

What Our Customers Are Building

From weekend DIY projects to full commercial build-outs, here is a sample of what Boise Lumber materials have gone into recently.

Eagle, ID — Timber-Frame Pavilion

A homeowner in Eagle used reclaimed Douglas fir 8x8 posts and 6x12 beams to build a 20x24 outdoor pavilion with an exposed timber frame. The structure features hand-pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, a cedar tongue-and-groove ceiling, and a natural stone fireplace surround. Total reclaimed timber used: approximately 1,800 board feet.

Materials: Reclaimed Douglas fir timbers, new cedar T&G ceiling, structural timber screws, penetrating oil finish

Downtown Boise — Brewery Taproom

A craft brewery on 8th Street specified reclaimed barn wood for their entire taproom interior: 1,400 square feet of accent wall cladding, a 22-foot bar top from joined reclaimed oak planks, and custom booth tables from salvaged fir. The project sourced 100 percent of its wood products from our reclaimed inventory.

Materials: Reclaimed mixed-species barn wood, reclaimed oak bar top, custom milled shiplap, matte polyurethane

Meridian, ID — Custom Home Build

A custom home builder in Meridian used a mix of new and reclaimed lumber throughout a 3,200 square foot residence. New SPF framing stock for structural walls and roof, reclaimed fir for exposed living room ceiling beams, and reclaimed oak for wide-plank flooring throughout the main level. Total lumber order: approximately 12,000 board feet.

Materials: New SPF framing, reclaimed Douglas fir beams, reclaimed white oak flooring, hardware package

Kuna, ID — Backyard Transformation

A family in Kuna ordered a complete backyard package: a cedar privacy fence (160 linear feet), two 4x8 raised garden beds from reclaimed cedar, a pergola built from 6x6 cedar posts and 2x8 rafters, and 6 cubic yards of pathway wood chips. The entire project was sourced from Boise Lumber with materials delivered in two loads.

Materials: New cedar fencing, reclaimed cedar garden beds, new cedar pergola stock, bulk wood chips

Nampa, ID — Furniture Workshop

A professional furniture maker in Nampa maintains a standing order with our facility for reclaimed hardwood shorts and offcuts. These pieces — typically 18 to 36 inches long — are too short for standard lumber sales but perfectly sized for cutting boards, small tables, and decorative items. Monthly volume: approximately 200 board feet of mixed hardwoods.

Materials: Reclaimed oak, maple, walnut, and cherry shorts, food-safe mineral oil, Titebond III glue

McCall, ID — Lakeside Cabin Renovation

A cabin renovation near McCall featured reclaimed pine shiplap on all interior walls, reclaimed fir stair treads, and a massive 10-foot reclaimed beam mantel over a stone fireplace. The owners wanted a rustic mountain aesthetic with genuinely aged wood rather than manufactured distressed products. We milled all shiplap to order and delivered on a flatbed.

Materials: Reclaimed pine shiplap (custom milled), reclaimed fir stair treads, reclaimed beam mantel, brad nails
