More Than Lumber

The Right Hardware Makes the Difference

A beautiful reclaimed beam installed with the wrong fasteners will fail. A pristine oak floor finished with the wrong sealer will peel. Hardware and finish products are not afterthoughts — they are integral to the performance, safety, and longevity of every lumber project.

That is why we stock a carefully selected range of fasteners, connectors, stains, sealants, and surface-prep materials at our Boise facility. We do not try to be a hardware superstore. Instead, we carry the specific products that work best with the lumber species and applications our customers use most — and our staff can explain why one product outperforms another for your particular situation.

When you buy lumber and hardware from the same place, you get matched recommendations. We know the moisture content, species, and end use of the wood you are purchasing, and we can recommend fasteners, finishes, and adhesives that are tested and proven for that exact combination.

Expert Advice

Common Questions, Straight Answers

Our staff fields these questions every week. Here are the answers we give — no upselling, just practical guidance from people who work with wood every day.

What fasteners work best with reclaimed lumber?

Reclaimed lumber is typically drier and harder than new stock, which means standard nails can bend and split the wood. We recommend structural screws with self-drilling tips — they cut their own path without pre-drilling and provide superior holding power in dense, seasoned material. For exterior applications on reclaimed wood, use stainless steel or coated fasteners to prevent tannin staining around the fastener.

How do I finish barn wood without losing the patina?

The key is using a clear penetrating finish rather than a film-forming one. Tung oil, Danish oil, or a matte water-based polyurethane will protect the surface while preserving the original color and texture. Avoid heavy sanding — a light scuff with 220-grit to remove loose fibers is usually all that is needed. Seal the back side too, to prevent moisture imbalance that causes cupping.

Do I need different connectors for reclaimed timbers?

Reclaimed timbers often have non-standard dimensions (a "6x6" might measure 5-3/4 x 5-3/4 or 6-1/4 x 6-1/4), so connector sizing needs to be verified. We carry adjustable-width connectors and custom fabrication options for non-standard sizes. For concealed connections in exposed timber-frame work, we stock knife plates, concealed beam hangers, and through-bolting hardware.

What sealant should I use between wood and concrete?

Never place lumber directly on concrete without a moisture barrier or sill sealer. For post bases and sill plates, we recommend a polyethylene sill gasket plus a bead of polyurethane caulk. This prevents moisture wicking from the concrete into the end grain of the wood, which is the primary cause of sill rot in Idaho construction.

Tool Guide

Recommended Tools for Lumber Projects

We do not sell power tools, but our staff frequently advises customers on which tools work best for specific lumber projects. Here are our honest recommendations based on years of daily use in our own facility and on job sites.

For reclaimed lumber specifically, invest in a good metal detector (handheld wand type), a pin-type moisture meter, and carbide-tipped saw blades rated for nail-embedded wood. These three tools will save you money in broken blades, wasted material, and installation problems that stem from undetected metal and incorrect moisture content.

Miter Saw (10" or 12")

Essential for cross-cutting lumber to length. A sliding compound miter saw handles boards up to 12 inches wide and makes precise angle cuts for trim and framing. Invest in a quality carbide blade with 60-80 teeth for clean cuts in both soft and hardwoods.

Circular Saw (7-1/4")

The most versatile job-site saw. Handles ripping, cross-cutting, and breaking down sheet goods. For reclaimed lumber, use a demolition blade (carbide teeth, nail-resistant) for initial cuts, then switch to a finish blade for final sizing.

Impact Driver

Drives structural screws faster and more effectively than a standard drill/driver. Virtually essential when using modern timber screws (GRK, FastenMaster) which require high torque. Get an 18V brushless model for best performance and battery life.

Random Orbital Sander (5")

Produces swirl-free finishes on wood surfaces. Use 80-grit for stock removal, 120-grit for pre-finish sanding, and 220-grit for between-coat sanding. Variable speed control is important for working on different species and applications.

Handheld Metal Detector

A must-have for reclaimed lumber. Wand-style detectors find embedded nails, screws, and wire before your saw blade does. Pay for itself with the first broken blade it prevents. Models from CH Hanson and Lumber Wizard are popular choices.

Moisture Meter

Verifies that lumber is at the correct moisture content for your application before installation. Pin-type models give direct readings at specific points. Pinless models scan larger areas quickly. Having both types is ideal for serious wood projects.
